VIDEO: The Evansville Fire District Chief says the organization’s secret to staying independent is a growing community, financial support from residents and a team that doubles as a family.
The Evansville Fire District celebrated 150 years of service on Saturday with a parade, station tour, raffle and a live demonstration.
Fire Chief Bob Fahey said without the community’s support it would be hard to stay independent, similar to a number of small communities who’ve seen their volunteer and paid-on-call departments consolidate.
”A lot of communities struggle to get people nowadays and with Evansville growing, we have more of a population to pull from,” Fire Chief Bob Fahey said.
Fire Chief Fahey also said their services are even more important in 2024 than in 1874 because fires are more dangerous.
