VIDEO: Wednesday morning, local leaders across Milwaukee County gathered at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center to honor the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
This year marks 23 years since al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes and deliberately crashed two into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center in NYC, a third into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people.
Wednesday morning law enforcement and first responder personnel laid wreaths on a section of an I-Beam from the World Trade Center that's housed at the war memorial in Milwaukee.
Each wreath honored the military personnel, veterans, firefighters, law enforcement, public servants, and community members who made sacrifices in the days, weeks, and years following the attacks.
