Around 10PM on Wednesday a tractor trailer was involved in an accident on I-64 West at mile marker 171 1/2 in Greenbrier Co., losing 6,800 gallons of fuel. Dispatch says one lane was reopened around 8:15AM. Lewisburg Fire Chief Joseph Lewis said the tanker truck lost 4,000 gallons of gasoline and 2,800 gallons of diesel fuel. He also says the driver of the truck is described as having skin tears but signed a refusal to go to the hospital. The cause for the accident is still under investigation by the Greenbrier County Sheriff's Office. As far as clean-up goes Lewisburg Fire Chief Joseph Lewis said some of the fuel was recovered last night. He says most of the fuel was spilled into the side ditch and emergency personnel created a damn to keep the fuel from spreading. He says a hazmat cleanup company from Bluefield has been called in to clean up the rest. They will test the soil and dig out any soil that tests positive for fuel. This process will be repeated until the soil does not test positive for fuel.
