Fire damaged a home in South Elkins Wednesday morning, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.
The cause of the blaze at the house at 1314 South Davis Avenue remains uncertain. The family living in the home escaped without injury, and a dog and cat that were trapped on the second floor were rescued.
“The cause of the fire is undetermined at the moment,” said Chief Tom Meader of the Elkins Fire Department. “We called the fire marshal’s office in so that they could make a determination. The estimate for damage is approximately $30,000.”
In years past, the property had functioned as a place of business, known as Stemple’s Store.
The Elkins Fire Department, the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department, the Coalton Volunteer Fire Department, the Elkins Police Department and the Randolph County Emergency Squad responded to the fire.
