A Parkersburg woman was able to escape from a house fire Wednesday morning. Parkersburg Fire Department responded to 1072 40th St. at around 9 a.m. to a report of a structure fire. Parkersburg Fire Chief Jason Matthews said crews arrived on scene to heavy smoke coming from the home. The home’s resident Liuyeh Cunningham had gotten out of the house before fire crews arrived. Being elderly and confined to a wheelchair, she needed neighbors’ help in getting away from the structure. “The fire was contained to the basement,” Matthews said. Two cats in the home also made it out. Matthews said emergency crews on the scene had to give one of the cats oxygen and “brought it back.” Crews had the fire knocked down within 10 minutes and then they were mopping up hot spots.
