A retired New Mexico city fire chief will take over the same post in Martinsburg, the city announced Friday. J.D. Hummingbird will assume the role of fire chief for the Martinsburg Fire Department beginning Monday, March 25, City Manager Mark Baldwin said. Hummingbird comes to Martinsburg after having served 11 years as fire chief in Artesia, New Mexico. He retired from the position in January of 2017 and is a current Berkeley County resident. Prior to his role as fire chief there, he served 20 years with the United States Air Force as a firefighter. He was selected as New Mexico Fire Chief of the Year in 2013. In his most recent role as fire chief in Artesia, Hummingbird managed 35 fire service personnel in two departments with an annual operating budget of $3.2 million, according to the city of Martinsburg’s press release.
