Firefighters in Wheeling will soon have new life-saving technology.
At Tuesday night's city council meeting an ordinance was unanimously passed to spend just under $78,000 to buy new thermal imaging cameras.
Nine new cameras will be purchased, adding to the three the city already has.
“The thermal imaging cameras allow us to better enhance our search and rescue efforts, allows us to actually see through smoke, actually identify bodies and even hot spots on a fire,” said Wheeling Fire Chief Larry Helms. “This will give us the opportunity to place one of these devices on every engine in the city. So, when the first arriving company gets on scene, they'll have that technology. It will definitely enhance our efforts.”
Chief Helms thanked the city council for their continued support.
