A small fire occurred at Niche Polymers in Ravenswood over the weekend with no injuries or extensive damage reported. According to Ravenswood Fire Chief Kevin McClain, the call came in around midnight Sunday.
The fire alarm in the factory went off and when the department arrived on the scene, smoke was rolling from the exhaust fans.
“When our crews did an interior search, the building was full of smoke,” McClain said.
It took the crews about an hour and a half to find the source of the fire due to the heavy smoke. McClain said they could only see about two feet in front of them. An electric motor looked like it had shorted out and was up against plastic causing the smoke.
“Mainly the plastic had laid there and smoldered. The fire was contained to about a 10-by-10 (foot) area,” McClain said.
Several neighboring fire departments also assisted.
