Doug Schrage, WFCA President

Douglas (Doug) Schrage has 35 years of experience as a firefighter and fire officer. He is the fire chief and emergency management director at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he oversees a highly successful, unique academic learning and vocational training program. Previously, Chief Schrage worked a full career with the Anchorage (Alaska) Fire Department where he held every rank, overseeing the 911 communications center, training division, and fire prevention division, and retiring as deputy chief of fire and rescue operations in 2010. Key contributions include the integration of fire and emergency medical services into a fully integrated, highly functioning dual-role emergency operations division, development of an officer development and mentoring program, and formation of an all-hazards regional incident management team. 

Chief Schrage was elected president of the Western Fire Chiefs Association in 2016. He is a past president and current board member of the Alaska Fire Chiefs Association, and board member of the Interior Fire Chiefs Association. He served on the International Association of Fire Chiefs Intrastate Mutual Aid Committee, has participated in IAFC strategic planning, and maintains several professional memberships. 

Chief Schrage has a master's degree in Fire and Emergency Management Administration from Oklahoma State University, a baccalaureate degree in Fire Service Administration from Western Oregon University, and an associate degree in Fire Science from the University of Alaska. Chief Schrage is active in the academic community, teaching several upper division and graduate level courses that he developed and serving on several academic advisory committees. He is on the editorial board for the International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management and is a National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer. 

Chief Schrage is active in Rotary and the community. He and his wife Mary, of 25 years, have raised three sons, Calvin, Benjamin and Aaron who are attending or have graduated from the University of Alaska. Together they enjoy big game hunting, fishing, flying, and recreating at their remote cabin.
