Fire spreads from one home to another in Cedar Rapids
Authorities say fire pit ashes are to blame for flames impacting two homes in Cedar Rapids Sunday. First responders were called to 3700 Blue Mound Dr NE around 3:15pm. Investigators the ashes from the pit were put in a yardy cart, which was the source of the fire that started in the garage of one of the homes. The home suffered heavy fire damage in its garage area before firefighters doused the flames. The wind pushed the flames to a neighboring house also causing heavy damage. No one was hurt. Officials say this serves as a reminder that ashes can retain their heat for days and that they need to be thoroughly soaked before throwing them away.

Des Moines Fire issues warning after brush fire ignites at Neal Smith Trail
Fire crews worked to put out a brush fire near the Neal Smith Trail that reignited Sunday afternoon. Des Moines Fire Captain David Leever said crews were on scene for four hours. They worked to put out the same brush fire on Saturday for six hours. Leever said they do not know what started the fire. But he said the dry weather was definitely a contributing factor. He said people should be extra mindful when it's this dry. "Be careful discarding hot items, hot embers, cigarettes, fireworks coming up in the summertime," Leever said. The National Weather Service said the dryness is due to the state's ongoing drought. The wind and warmer air are also making things more susceptible to catch on fire. "That's why we have this grass fire risk in those times of year," Andrew Ansorge, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said.

Woman thanks Tiffin first responders who saved her life after car accident
VIDEO: On March 5, 2023, Kathy Gerling and her grandson Noah were in a life-threatening car accident, just outside of Tiffin. Dozens of first responders came to their rescue, got Gerling and her grandson out of the vehicle, and took them to UIHC, where Gerling learned of her extensive injuries. “I had my C1 and two vertebra fractured, several broken ribs. Both of my legs were broken,” says Gerling. Now, more than a year later, she’s made nearly a full recovery, and credits the volunteers and other responders who sped to the scene with saving her life. “I wanted to let them know that I too appreciated what they did. This is huge. People just don’t tell them well, how things turn out or show them gratitude. And they should. Because I know without them I wouldn’t be here,” says Gerling.
