State firefighter honored with Billings procession following death in Miles City


VIDEO: Firefighters in eastern Montana are mourning the loss of a state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation firefighter, who died in the line of duty after a "medical incident" Tuesday in Miles City, according to DNRC officials. John Raisler was the assistant fire management officer for the DNRC eastern land office, and he also served as volunteer for the Custer County Rural Fire Department. He was a member of the DNRC all-hazards County Assist Team and an advocate for continuing education as a training facilitator for the Fire Protection Bureau, according to the agency. He was 59, according to a notice from Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home. A procession made up of firefighters Wednesday escorted Raisler's body through Billings.

50-acre wildfire sparked by power line on Custer Gallatin National Forest


The Ashland Ranger Station in the Custer Gallatin National Forest is reporting a wildfire near the Whitetail Cabin. At last report Tuesday afternoon, it was covering 50 acres of Forest Service land. Information provided by the U.S. Forest Service indicates a downed power line sparked the fire. Forest Service teams were on the scene, and Powder River County sent in five engines and a dozer.

Recognizing the work of Public Safety Telecommunicators in Great Falls


VIDEO: Public Safety Telecommunicators are the first point of contact in any emergency call, coordinating services and obtaining essential information to send the appropriate responders. “We take about 45,000 calls a year and 80,000 non-emergency calls,” says 911 Center Director Karen Young, “the dispatchers can tell by the ringtone if it's an emergency or non-emergency." National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week honors and recognizes the life saving service they provide all over the country. In Great Falls, Communications Officer Supervisor Leather Hersey coordinated with organizations the center works with to provide gifts showing appreciation for the dispatchers. On Monday, the Great Falls Police Protective Association and Great Falls PD had provided lunch to the center.

Apartment catches on fire in Butte


An apartment building caught on fire in the 600 block of South Idaho Street in Butte Monday. The Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department said on social media smoke was coming out of the ground floor unit. Firefighters were able to control the fire in a short amount of time. There was only one person in the entire building. Crews did overhaul and secondary searches. There was minimal fire damage, but there was smoke damage to the building. No injuries were reported.
