A lifetime of service: Memorial sign honors late Allentown assistant fire chief

PHOTO: They gathered to honor and remember the selfless beauty of the man. His sharing of himself - of his time, his heart, his soul. Humanity with no end, no matter the time or place. An altruism dedicated to making folks safer throughout his community and around the world. Allentown Fire Department Assistant Chief Christopher Kiskeravage devoted nearly all of his 56 years of life to helping others - until he died of pancreatic cancer last June and was called to climb that final ladder to heaven. In the end, the paradox is unmistakable: A husband, father and grandfather who shared chunks of himself with others in order to make himself whole. Fellow firefighters, new recruits, family and friends gathered outside the Mack Southside Fire Station and Training Academy on Friday morning as Kiskeravage, the retired assistant chief for training, was honored with the dedication of a memorial sign along Lehigh Street.

Barn fire destroys shop, apartments in northern Berks County

VIDEOS/PHOTOS: A fire that broke out in Albany Township, Berks County on Sunday afternoon is under investigation. "We got dispatched for a structure fire," said Kempton Fire Company Lt. Owen King. "Unfortunately, it was multi-structure when we got there," said King. The fire happened in the area of Route 737 and Turkey Road just before 4 p.m. "We were not able to save the large shop that was there or the apartments behind it," said King. King said he believes the owner was home at the time. There were tools and a music studio inside the shop, according to King. "We were able to save the large residence and the storage shed as well that were both exposed to fire," said King. Smoke could be seen from miles away. Roads in the area were temporarily closed.

The department said one firefighter was taken by Good Will EMS to Pottstown Tower Health Hospital for evaluation from smoke inhalation. Ambulance service and the ability to respond to 911 calls for assistance remain intact, officials said.

Emergency crews responded to a fire at Kennywood Park Wednesday evening that has since been put out. A photo provided to WTAE showed flames and smoke billowing out from the park earlier in the evening. A Pittsburgh's Action News 4 team on the scene saw firefighters, police and medics. There were no visible flames as of about 10:15 p.m. Lynsey Winters, a spokesperson for Kennywood, said, "(A) small fire was reported on the roof of one of the buildings at the park this evening. Local fire departments responded immediately and the fire was quickly put out. There were no injuries." She said that the building impacted sits beside the Parkside Cafe. It is unclear what the full impact to that building might be. According to Winters, the park believes the fire was caused by lightning from Wednesday night's storms.
