The Seward Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department got to celebrate the anniversary of its founding on Saturday with a little pomp, a live demonstration and some action. Members of the department kicked off a 40th anniversary gala at 4 p.m. on Saturday that included a free meal for area residents, games and a live exhibition of how the "Jaws of Life" function. "We want to thank everyone who came out today to help us celebrate," said SBCVFD Chief Connie Bacon during introductions. Before being summoned for a fire call in Seward, members of the department presented a live display on the use of the Jaws of Life tools. The members removed the doors, windshield and roof from an automobile. The Seward Bear Creek VFD was founded in 1977 when it became necessary for an additional fire department to be established as a way to protect the growing population north of Seward.
