Five fire departments responded to a coal ash fire Sunday morning at the Fort Wainwright power plant.
No one was hurt and there was no disruption in service, according to Grant Sattler, U.S. Army post spokesman.
The cause of the fire that started in the south coal tower at about 9:30 a.m. is under investigation, Sattler said. The fire was extinguished by 11:30 a.m., he said.
Firefighters from Fort Wainwright were joined by firefighters from the Fairbanks Fire Department, the Steese Volunteer Fire Department, the University Fire Department and the fire department on Eielson Air Force Base, Sattler said.
"It's always good to have the units on hand if needed," he said.
The north coal tower is fully operational and sufficient to continue providing electricity and steam heat to the Army post, Sattler said.
