The occupants of an apartment building were forced from their homes by fire just before 11 p.m. Tuesday at 1029 Montague St. on Rockford's southwest side. Heavy flames and smoke were coming from the building when firefighters arrived. Everyone inside escaped without harm, and the Red Cross provided a place to stay for the night. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it caused about $70,000 in damage.
