One firefighter was injured while battling a house fire Thursday night in northwest suburban Elgin.
Crews were called to the house in the 200 block of Mill Street in Elgin at 7:28 p.m. with reports that smoke detectors were going off and smoke was coming out of the building, according to a statement from the Elgin Fire Department.
The fire appeared to have started in a kitchen trash can and extended into the wall and ceiling, the fire department said. The residents were not home when crews arrived. One firefighter fell because of icy conditions while fighting the fire and was taken to a hospital to be treated, officials said. There were no civilian injuries.
The fire caused an estimated $11,000 in damage to the house, the fire department said. The cause remains under investigation.
