Aldermen recommended approval to buy a new fire department engine for $618,423 at Committee of the Whole Dec. 10.
The Pierce Enforcer Fire Engine, from Global Emergency Products in Aurora, will replace Engine 209, which is more than 28 years old and currently in reserve status, officials said.
The new engine will go into front line service at Station No. 1 and the existing front line engine, Engine 205, which is 20 years old, will be placed in reserve status.
The cost includes a prepayment discount of 2.8 percent, officials said.
Fire Chief Michael Antenore said the vehicle being retired was purchased in 1991 and the industry has had many safety changes to fire engines since then.
“Lighting, cage safety, a lot of the aspects of the personnel safety – this engine we are retiring is the first one with an enclosed cab,” Antenore said.
