An elderly woman is now at a burn center after a late morning fire in Pitt County. The North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center confirms Barbara Payton is in serious condition. Four different volunteer fire departments were called around 11:45 a.m. to the double-wide mobile home at 5755 County Home Road. Crews reported smoke and fire when they first arrived. Winterville Community Fire Department says Payton was first taken to Vidant Medical Center. Her son, Gregory Taylor, says the 75-year-old is now sedated and on breathing machines at the Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill. Winterville Fire Captain Tony Klontz, off-duty Greenville Fire Lt. Eric Smith and neighbor Christopher Ross pulled the woman out of the burning home. "One of my neighbors from across the road went running and they tried to kick in the door and one of the first responders came and both of them kicked the front door in and after that they pulled her out and immediately started CPR," said neighbor Ruth Umphlett. Officials confirmed late Tuesday that Payton was in serious condition. We were also told that she suffered severe smoke inhalation. Pitt County Fire Inspector Wayne Peaden says the fire started in the bedroom, but the cause remains undetermined.
