Firefighters were called to a home on Grace Avenue in Kannapolis around 2 a.m. and when they arrived they found the victim outside of the garage with significant burn injuries. A medical helicopter had to take the man to a burn center in Winston-Salem. Investigators said the victim was a homeless man who was living in someone's garage when it caught fire. The fire, which destroyed the garage and caused the roof to collapse, was so hot that it damaged two other homes. Investigators said the victim was friends with the people renting the home next to the garage and that he had permission to stay in garage. It’s still unclear what may have caused the fire. It was very cold early Monday morning and investigators said there is a chance the man was trying to find a way to stay warm. The cold temperatures did not cause any problems for firefighters battling the flames, but the fire did damage the electrical wiring to the house behind the garage.
