After 29 days as an active wildfire, the Chestnut Knob Fire at South Mountains State Park in Burke County was declared out Sunday.
More rain over the weekend cooled the fire and an infrared flight Saturday showed no heat. The Florida Forest Service turned control of the fire scene back over to the North Carolina Forest Service and the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation on Monday morning.
The fire began Nov. 6 and grew rapidly for two weeks, peaking at 6,435 acres. More than 400 personnel reported to the incident, including teams from Florida, California, Arizona, New Mexico and other states. Every fire department in Burke County cooperated with fire staff, along with departments from surrounding counties.
