The town council has voted to allow firefighters to live full-time at the fire station in hopes that round-the-clock coverage will lower insurance rates for residents. The council voted unanimously Nov. 14 to revise its live-in policy for Winterville Fire-Rescue-EMS from a five-night limit to seven nights. Officials said one or more firefighters, possibly ones who also go to school at East Carolina University or Pitt Community College, could live at the station to help offset personal expenses and provide 24-7 coverage. The fire department is striving to maintain an Insurance Service Office rating of 6 to keep Winterville's taxpayers' homeowners' insurance rates between $259 to $320. An ISO rating of 7 would increase insurance rates to $318 to $394.
