Minutes before the official opening of Burlington Fire Station 6, scheduled for 8 a.m. Thursday, firefighters were off responding to a wreck.
“It was pretty neat covering the first call out of the station,” said Lindsey Boger, one of the first firefighters assigned to the new station. “Some of them were taking pictures as we were pulling out, but someone’s got to run it.” After months of setbacks, the new station along Bonnar Bridge Parkway has officially opened. A public grand opening celebration and open house is set for 10 a.m. until noon Oct. 6.
“It definitely makes the responsibility that I have and the fire department has to protect the citizens easier,” Fire Chief Jay Smith said. “It allows us to provide that level of service to them that we need to be providing.”
The fire station originally was slated to open as early as March, but a manufacture’s delay in steel pushed back the opening several months.
