Two vehicles ran off the highway and overturned in two unrelated wrecks that occurred in the rain Monday afternoon in Wilkes County. The first wreck occurred shortly after 4 p.m. just north of North Wilkesboro when a Mazda car ran off the right side of Suncrest Orchard Road, hit a tree, overturned and stopped on its top. Four people were in the Mazda and at least two of them, including an 11-year-old girl, were seriously hurt. The driver of the car was Melissa Garcia of North Wilkesboro, according to Trooper Z.M. Jennings of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Wilkes Rescue Squad and Wilkes Emergency Medical Services personnel removed the victims. Cricket Fire Department first responders and firefighters stopped traffic in both directions during the emergency effort. A Wilkes Sheriff’s Department deputy was also at the scene.
