The Leland Town Council approved a request for more money to pay for two new part-time firefighters on Thursday night.
Close to $65,000 will allow for at least one staff member to be at the Westport station off Highway 133 around the clock, something that is not available at this time.
Leland Town Councilman Michael Callahan said the additional staff will help speed up the current response time.
"We have lots of areas in Leland, especially down here south of 17, that need coverage and need quicker coverage into the Brunswick Forrest area," Callahan said.
Leland currently doesn't have a municipal fire department, but has a contract with Leland Fire and Rescue, a volunteer fire department, to provide services for residents.
