In Winterville volunteer firefighters will soon be getting paid for their services. The rural fire station is receiving the SAFER grant from FEMA for a $133,000. Treasurer and volunteer firefighter Todd Ausbon said they applied for the grant earlier this year. Now that they have accepted it, he hopes it will serve as an incentive for people to join. “We are going to pay them 12 dollars like I said per fire call. It’s also going to pay them 8 dollars per hour of training they attend to help better themselves and know what to do an dhow to respond to emergencies,” said Ausbon.
