Asheville firefighters paused Monday to remember a colleague who died in the line of duty.
Charles "Gus" Werhan was called in on his day off to help fight a fire. He died Dec. 9, 1963, when the burning building on Biltmore Avenue collapsed.
The downtown fire station was named for Werhan in 2014.
"Every year, we pause and remember Gus, remember the contributions he gave to our community, to our fire department. We remember the impact that it had on his family, and that is why we do this every single year," chief Scott Burnette said.
