A questionable loan between two Buncombe County fire departments will now be reviewed by independent auditors. Riceville residents complained to the county attorney and two commissioners they had no faith in the fire department board finances. In a July vote over the phone, the Riceville board agreed to loan the Skyland department $150,000 to meet payroll. Buncombe County commissioner Mike Fryer said the county has agreed to pay for a consultant group of former firefighters to help Riceville establish new bylaws and review the department's finances. The cost will be about $8,000.
