Winston-Salem saw four fires break out in abandoned or vacant buildings over a period of three days during the first full week of 2017, an assistant fire chief said Wednesday during a monthly public safety news conference.
Two fires happened within an hour of each other, Assistant Fire Chief Robert Owens said.
That’s in addition to a fifth fire that swept through the vacant former Brown Elementary School on Dec. 20, 2016, near the corner of 12th Street and Highland Avenue.
