“A ball of fire,” was how Grady Walker described the crash.
Walker, a member of the Hendersonville Rescue Squad, watched the Boeing 727 and Cessna 310 collide from his home near Camp Pinewood.
“Pieces began breaking off,” Walker told the Times-News in 1967. “I knew they were going to crash when I saw them, so I started for the house.”
Walker called the police and then ran to Camp Pinewood. Some of the camp kids had gone to where the wreckage was in the woods. He told them to get away and take cover as explosions erupted.
