Two parents say they are glad their six kids are safe after their home filled with smoke Wednesday afternoon, forcing them to evacuate. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to help the Lackey family with temporary housing. Statesville Fire Chief Spencer Lee said the fire started in the laundry room at the home at 1711 Kenhill Road. The cause is under investigation. When firefighters arrived shortly after 4 p.m., heavy smoke was pouring from the single-story home from under the roof.
