Sunset Beach Fire Chief Kevin Dempsey said he will retire in June, per his doctor's advice, to stay healthy following a heart attack. Dempsey's doctor gave the recommendation when Dempsey went in for blood work in March. Dempsey had a heart attack about one year ago. The fire chief is currently on medical leave and said the state approved his retirement request. His last official day with the town will be May 30. In the meantime, Deputy Chief Richard Childress has taken over the position. Town council will discuss advertising the new fire chief position at its meeting on April 19.
