The city of Jacksonville is considering advanced EMT training for firefighters which would allow them to perform more medical procedures. Jacksonville City Council met Tuesday night to hear a proposed plan The Atlantic Beach Fire Department is one such department where the majority of their firefighters have their paramedic certification. They say it's necessary to be allowed to put in "IV's" or open airways. The proposal Jacksonville is considering would cost $26,000 the next fiscal year for the training. City Manager Dr. Richard Woodruff says, "Over the last six years our police and fire personnel have saved 36 lives utilizing the EMT basic. We believe by going to the advanced training, that we can increase the number of lives that are saved for our citizens."
