A volunteer firefighter laid to rest in Rowan County. Firefighters from across the state joined family and friends to remember Michael Goodnight. He died in a crash last week.
There was silence as a fire truck carrying the body of 55-year-old Goodnight arrived at Rowan Memorial Park on Monday.
“Today is all about honoring a firefighter’s history and complete career,” says Chief Chris Soliz with Rowan Co. Emergency Services.
Several fire departments from across the area took part in a procession through Salisbury.
“It’s a very unique profession and we understand the sacrifices that each other has to make, being away from family, answering calls in the middle of the night,” Soliz says.
Goodnight worked for two years as a volunteer at West Liberty Fire Department. Family members say the job was his passion. He was responding to what he thought was an emergency call on the 4th of July.
