Authorities in Cary on Friday were investigating whether a fire at a mosque this morning was deliberately set as an act of vandalism.
More than 25 firefighters arrived at the Islamic Center of Cary, located at 1076 W. Chatham Street, shortly before 8 a.m. and found smoke coming from the building.
It was not immediately clear how the fire inside the center started, but not injuries have been reported.
Shakil Ahmed, president of the Islamic Center, said the mosque has been under construction for 10 years, and is about six months from being fully complete.
WRAL News has learned that the FBI and officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are at the scene and also looking into how the fire started.
Ahmed says crews working on the building arrived at the site around 7:30 a.m. and found heavy smoke. Workers also found a window that had been broken in the rear of the mosque.
