The assistant chief at Cool Springs Volunteer Fire Department who was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash Tuesday morning had his left leg amputated, the fire department said. Ray Elmore, 45, is also being treated for severe injuries to his left arm, pelvis and trachea, according to a website that is collecting money to help pay for his hospital bills. The online fundraiser had collected more than $5,500 as of Wednesday afternoon. Cool Springs Fire Chief Andy Webster said Elmore opened his eyes Wednesday. “We’re just watching and waiting,” Webster said. “Hopefully in another 24 hours, we’ll have another update.” The crash happened at 6:43 a.m. in the 1100 block of Charlotte Highway (U.S. 21) south of Troutman, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
