The Oregon State Police identified the victim of a fatal fire early Wednesday morning at 150 East River Street as Donald Thomas, 65.
Thomas owned the 1-acre property, according to Josephine County Assessor property records.
Ned Booth of Illinois Valley Fire District said Thomas
helped homeless people, and recently gave away several mattresses that were donated by hotels.
The fire was reported just after midnight, and firefighters found Thomas inside after putting out the flames.
Investigators were on the scene Wednesday afternoon, and at that point no cause had been released, Booth said.
Thomas was the only one at the house, but a woman was staying in a shed on the property.
