Clallam County Fire Protection District (FPD) No. 4 is an all-volunteer response agency comprised of volunteer firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, a part-time administrative assistant, and the Fire Chief. The district has determined that the workload of the Fire Chief has grown to require regular staffing of this position. The Board of Commissioners recognizes the need to hire a full-time paid Fire Chief and are seeking applicants to fill the position. The Fire Chief is responsible for administering, planning, and directing the operations of the district under the direction of the elected Board of Commissioners and for providing direct supervision to the officers, volunteers, and administrative staff. There is an expectation this position will provide a high frequency of response to calls.

Joyce, Washington, is a rural community of some 3,500 residents located 15 miles west of Port Angeles. Halfway between Washington’s Pacific Ocean and Seattle on the Olympic Peninsula’s National Scenic Byway Highway 112, Joyce sees a seasonal influx of tourism in the summer months. The district of 20-30 volunteers responds to an average of 300 calls per year.

The Fire Chief carries out responsibilities in accordance with the district’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training personnel; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining personnel; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. Beginning salary range: $56,235-$72,912, dependent upon experience and qualifications plus benefits, which include retirement plan, workers’ compensation, unemployment, medical coverage, paid sick leave, vacation, and social security coverage.
