Assistant Fire Chief

City of Sunnyside

Location: Sunnyside, WA

Assistant Fire Chief  - $7,287 - $9,132 per month

The position remains open until filled with first review June 15, 2022

Come to the sun! The City of Sunnyside is seeking qualified candidates to immediately fill two (2) newly created Assistant Fire Chief positions as part of a recently approved reorganization and growth plan. The Sunnyside Fire Department is located in scenic southcentral Washington state. With its rolling foothills, close proximity to the Columbia River and situated right in the heart of Yakima Valley wine country, Sunnyside is culturally diverse, progressive and growing in family-friendly Eastern Washington. Under guidance by the new City Manager the Sunnyside Fire Department anticipates great opportunities for its new Assistant Chiefs. SFD is an all-hazard true combination department. Originally created as an all-volunteer department nearly 120 years ago, the SFD now has 18 FTEs represented by IAFF Local 3542 and more than 40 volunteer firefighter members of the Sunnyside Volunteer Firefighters Association. In addition to structural firefighting, the agency is responsible for all aspects of fire prevention and investigation, public fire life safety education, and fire setter intervention. We currently staff both the City of Sunnyside and City of Grandview and serve the much larger 400 square miles of Yakima County Trauma Regions II and III. Although the bulk of our call volume is EMS related since SFD operates the only fire based ambulance service, Sunnyside Fire provides regional rope, confined space, and trench rescue services as well as a Type III ammonia response team which will be expanded to a Type II CBRN capabilities in 2022. SFD strives to meet NFPA standards and best practices with an objective of future accreditation. We participate in automatic aid with the Cities of Grandview and Mabton, and the West Benton Regional Fire Authority, as well as Yakima County Fire District #5. We also participate in the Yakima countywide mutual aid agreement, the all-hazard State Mobilization Plan, and hold Interagency Agreements with the Washington Department of Natural Resources and Hanford Nuclear Facility. If you forward looking, enjoy setting the example for others to follow, and above all love serving the community 1st, we want to hear from you. Come see what Sunnyside Fire has to offer.
