• Will be responsible for the administration and management of the Fire Department’s fire and life safety education programs.
• Supervises and conducts classes and presentations promoting fire prevention and life safety concepts to the general public, schools, and business community.
• Manages the Juvenile Fire Setter Program and various public education programs.
• Responsible for the public education annual budget which monitors equipment, supplies, improvements, and related needs
• makes presentations outside normal working hours when needed, and communicates with others to maximize the effectiveness of interdepartmental operations.
• Supervises public education volunteers.

Essential Functions

Researches, plans, manages, and delivers public education programs and outreach campaigns to the community, including but not limited to fire and life safety education, disaster preparedness, first aid and CPR, fall and fire prevention education for older adults, ongoing public and private school education programs (fire safe house and Fire Prevention Week), fire extinguisher classes, general fire safety, evacuation plans, and fire drills. Conducts evaluations for the effectiveness of fire and life safety education programs and implements improvements. (30%) Develops effective working relationships with schools, community groups, neighborhood organizations, non-profits, and businesses to develop partnerships in fire prevention education. Encourages citizen involvement and shares information throughout the community. Acts as a representative of the Fire Department on boards, task forces, or committees related to fire and life safety education. Seeks departmental, public and private partnerships in implementing and managing fire and life safety programs. (20%) Develops and maintains a Community Risk Reduction Plan. Analyzes emergency response data to inform a Community Risk Reduction strategy based on community needs and data. Ensures strategies accommodate diversity and equity to all portions of the community. (20%) Plan manage and administer the Department’s Juvenile Fire Setter Program; conducts screenings, maintain records, and recommend follow-up action to be taken to parents and local authorities. (10%) Plan manage and administer the Department’s Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Program, seeks partner funding opportunities, install detectors, and provides community education and training on detectors. (10%) Plans and manages Public Relations activities including fire department tours and firefighter visits. Attends or plans attendance at community events to further community knowledge of fire and life safety and the fire department. (10%)

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training Bachelor's degree in education, communications or related field and three years of experience in an education setting including one-year supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Ability to create and assess program goals and provide clear recommendations to enhance delivery and content associated with all programming; work with a variety of participants with particular focus on youth, adults, families and under-served populations; quickly solve problems and ensure participants experience excellent service; develop and teach classes for all age groups; create, implement and manage budgets; operate a computer with demonstrated proficiency using related database, word processing and spreadsheet software applications at an appropriate level for efficient job performance; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Extensive knowledge or experience with structural firefighting, wildland firefighting and emergency medical care.

Licensing And Other Requirements
Must possess a valid Idaho Class D driver’s license.

Must possess a valid American Heart Association BLS Instructor Certification within 24-months of hire.

Must complete a Youth Fire Setting Prevention and Intervention training within 24-months of hire.

Special Requirements

Applicants must be able to pass:

City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

Drug Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post - Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hire.
