PHOTOS: Several days of ice rescue training for Monroe Fire Protection District firefighters last week proved useful when a call came in about what appeared to be a person's head visible above the ice near the Lake Monroe spillway. Friday afternoon, firefighters from Station 21 were dispatched to the Lake Monroe spillway after receiving a report of a person’s head sticking out of the ice. "Upon their arrival, they immediately began rescue operations," according to an account on the fire department's Facebook page. "Firefighters in ice suits went out on the ice to attempt a rescue." While making their way to the "victim," rescuers realized the head had been severed from a clothing store mannequin and "had been tossed out on the ice." The incident happened a few days after a three-day outdoor training on ice rescues.
