VIDEO/PHOTOS: Lives lost, but not forgotten.
It's been over 16 years since nine firefighters with the Charleston Fire Department (CFD) lost their lives fighting a blaze at the Sofa Super Store in West Ashley. Out of that terrible scene, a finished memorial honors the fallen and serves as a reminder of that night.
"There's a lot of symbiology in that fire station," Charleston Director of Parks and Capital Projects Jason Kronsberg said. "These sites are knitted together with pedestrian pathways and really telling that whole story."
CFD Assistant Chief David Griffin was there the night of the fire.
"It went so fast, it felt like when those 30 minutes passed, we were trying to figure out who we were missing," Griffin said. "It was very difficult for us to find out what do next. There are a lot of people that weighs heavy on."
