A massive fire burned through the abandoned Uplands Mansion in west Baltimore.
Video from SkyTeam 11, Baltimore's only news helicopter, showed the three-alarm fire burning through the structure off Old Frederick Road between Edmondson and Athol avenues. Baltimore City Fire Department officials told 11 News that firefighters were called around 5:30 p.m.
The fire was elevated to three alarms and nearly 100 firefighters arrived on scene. Officials said the wind fueled the fire, making it harder to contact.
Fire crews battled the flames exclusively from the outside in order to protect firefighters.
"No firefighters are inside battling the fire. This is an old vacant structure and it certainly wouldn't be safe for them to gain entry, so again, we are performing an exterior operation right now," fire spokesman Kevin Cartwright said.
