VIDEO: Firefighters who work for Decatur Fire and Rescue have operated on different schedule since early 2024. The previous schedule had firefighters working 24 hour shifts, before having 48 hours off. The new schedule has firefighters work 48 hours straight, before having 96 hours off. Decatur Fire Deputy Chief Nathan Springer said the move was requested by firefighters in 2023, and has already improved fire operation since. “We’ve not had any true negative feedback,” he said. “Even from some of our department members who were apprehensive about the change, they have reported being pleasantly surprised with the rest they’re getting in their off time, and reporting to work more well rested.” Springer said the scheduling model allows firefighters to spend more time with their families, and have more time off.
