PHOTOS: In commemoration of a 1911 fire that helped shape Conroe's history, Fass Brewing on the downtown square has released a special beer.
Fass Brewing launched its first Rauchbier called "The Great Fire" this week commemorating the Feb. 21, 1911 anniversary of the fire that decimated the east side of the courthouse square.
Conroe’s big fire of Feb. 21, 1911 was so significant to the town, it is the subject of a Texas State Historical Marker downtown and its still being commemorated 113 years later.
It has been said that a cold front had come through town the night of Feb. 21 and during the night fire broke out in the upstairs of a drug store on the eastern side of the courthouse. At the time, nearly all the structures in downtown were made of wood.
