At 12:50 a.m. on Monday, officials got calls about a 100-foot-by-100-foot fire near the South Fork trail head at the end of Hiland Road, a 7.5-mile spur road off of the Glen Highway. When the Mat-Su Area Forestry office in Palmer was dispatched to the fire, they sized it up at about one-half acre and creeping at about a quarter mile from residences. The 20-person Pioneer Peak Interagency Hotshot Crew from Mat-Su Area Forestry arrived at the scene at 10:45 a.m. and reported that there was a high probability of success in containing the blaze to its current size. Firefighters laid hose lines around the entire fire by early Monday morning, but more crews were called in out of precaution for spot fires due to warm, windy conditions. Those included a four person helitack crew and another engine crew. The public is asked to avoid the area until the firefighters' work is completed. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this point and is under investigation.
