Heavy weekend rains helped to suppress growth of the Oregon Lakes fire. BLM Alaska Fire Service says that it is still too early to know the exact impact the rains had, but that the rain should improve green-up in the area which will help slow the growth of the fire. Parts of the fire were sheltered by thick trees or ground cover and will continue to smolder until the ground dries enough for it to move. Firefighters took advantage of the rain to continue property protection and to do maintenance of pumps and sprinklers ahead of expected hot dry weather. The Fire Service expects the fire to continue burning throughout the summer with smoke blowing into Fairbanks occasionally.
