An incident management team assembled Monday after a fire reported near Fort Greely last week has grown to more than 6,600 acres. The National Weather Service has also issued a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday due to dry and windy conditions in Deltana and the Tanana Flats. The Oregon Lakes Fire is burning seven miles Southwest of Fort Greely in Donnelly Training Area. Neither wildland firefighters nor low-flying fire suppression aircraft have been able to attack the fire because of unexploded military ordnance on the ground, according to the BLM Alaska Fire Service. The fire was first reported Tuesday as a 30-acre wildfire. The fire is burning mostly in tall, dry grass and trees downed by the 2013 Mississippi Fire and isn't immediately threatening any buildings, military targets or other valuable resources. However, a Type II Incident Management Team assembled Monday because the Delta River drainage where the fire is burning has a history of weather patterns that make managing fires more challenging and could cause the fire to last throughout the summer.
