A local entertainment venue, the Blue Loon, caught fire on May 16, 2019 and there was not an immediate cause known. After months of investigation and interviews with witnesses, the state fire marshal’s office released a report classifying the fire as undetermined. The origin of the fire was identified as the exterior of the structure on the south side adjacent to the exterior stage. For the explanation of why the cause of the fire was classified as undetermined, the report said, “No specific competent heat source(s) were discovered at the immediate area of origin. Because the exact competent heat source was not identified, based upon the classification requirements set forth by NFPA 921, this fire is classified as Undetermined. The building was insured, and the building and its contents were determined to be a complete loss.” Kyle Carrington, Deputy Fire Marshal I, in the Fairbanks office said that they did rule out natural causes like lightning and when reviewing surveillance footage did not see any suspicious vehicle or pedestrian activity.
