The work started when the fire started for Vic Pearce, a volunteer firefighter with the Caswell Fire Department. He worked the front lines of the fire Saturday and Sunday. It was 2:00 a.m. Monday when he finally got back to his Willow home and discovered the fire roaring in his own backyard. "Rolled back in from fighting fires and this place was lit up like a Christmas tree," Pearce said. "I didn't know if I'd be able to save it." Fire crews got to work defending his property and continue to work there still. Also Monday, Pioneer Peak Hotshots are mopping up and cutting down the remaining burned trees. They've been working 16 hour days to keep up. Labor Day here looks a lot like any other day. "Honestly, that means holiday pay, that's about it," says wildland firefighter Alex Nelsen. "You just keep on going, that's what all these crews do," Pearce says. " If there's fire, it never says enough, and so firefighters have to be the same way. It's never enough, you always have to go."
