They may be out of uniform and using tools not part of their daily routine, but members of Anchorage Firefighters Union Local 1264 are still helping others. "Anytime you can be part of something that is bigger than yourself, people want to jump on that," said union member Mia Carson. Carson and the firefighters are building 10 sets of bunk beds for children around Southcentral as part of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. "Like this week, we're dealing with minus 20 to minus 40 temperatures," said Alaska chapter president John Holwege. "Some of these kids we're delivering these bunk beds to are sleeping on piles of dirty clothes, blankets." The Alaska chapter has helped give children a good night's sleep since 2012.
